Birmingham Men’s Cross Country League Division 2
Saturday 11th February 2012.
B&R’s squad end the league season on a high

Above: All fifteen runners pose for posterity at the end of the 2011-2012 Birmingham League season.
Bromsgrove & Redditch AC went in to the last Birmingham Cross Country League race at Aldersley in Wolverhampton in 14th place in Division 2. The squad saved their best result of the season for this last fixture to dispel any worries of being dragged in to the relegation zone. Rich Lomas (16th) again led the team home over the still icy course followed by Dave Gemmell, Sean Bowden, Andy Freeman, Ashley Ross and Steve Williams. The A team recorded less than 300 points for the first time this season to achieve their best position, 6 th out of 18 teams. The next six finishers Damian Lewis, Jamie Dancyger, the improving Steve Beddoe, Phil Anderson, debut cross country runner Daryll Thomas and making a welcome comeback Gavin Moorhead earned 4th place for the B team. The squad’s strength in depth was shown as it had three other finishers Phil Richardson (151st), Pete Hawcroft (160th) and Ian Nutter (169th). So Phil finally broke the hoodoo that Pete has had over him this season. The result saw Bromsgrove & Redditch leap four places to a very healthy mid-table tenth place in the main competition and fifth in the B competition. Team manager broke open the chocolate shortbread to celebrate a fine effort by all our runners. Having started shakily at Leamington back in November the team finished on a high and the young squad (only one of our six A team scorers was a veteran) could hope to challenge for promotion next season. Rugby & Northampton AC secured an immediate return to division one after relegation last season. They are joined by Wolverhampton & Bilston AC and congratulations are due to our local rivals Worcester AC who were promoted back to the top division for the first time in many years.
Thanks to team manager Len for unstinting work in encouraging people to run and of course bringing the tent and cakes. Thanks also to all the friends and family who have turned out to support in all weathers and of course all the athletes who have given up their Saturdays to represent the club. See you all again in the Autumn!
The last cross country challenge of the season will be the English National Cross Country Championships over the classic Parliament Hill course in London on Saturday 25th February.
