The race organizers and helpers arrived at the race H.Q. at Waseley Hills School to be greeted by rain, rain and more rain. This may have put off some runners who would have been tempted to enter on the day but still over 90 lined up at the start and it was great to see so many of our regular running friends from Amazing Feet, Stourbridge, Cocks Moor Wood, Halesowen etc. It was also terrific to see faces from further afield and lots of hardy local runners out to conquer our hills. You’re all very welcome next year when we plan to have good weather and our usual mud-free course!

Matthew Phillips (Swansea Harriers) had a worthwhile trip to Bromsgrove from Abervagenny finishing the clear winner in very good time of 53.11 despite the worst conditions for the event in twenty years. Jamie Johnston (Bournville Harriers) clinched second place in 55.58. Last year’s winner Matt Hawcroft (u/a) was third in 56.58 despite feeling unwell on the day.

Ian Keyte (Bromsgrove and Redditch) was first MV40 and 5th overall in 59.39. Ian also won the trophy for the first man from the home club to finish. B&R’s Jamie Dancyger and Calvin Scoltock had a great battle to finish 9th and 10th in 61.48 and 61.59. Ian, Jamie and Calvin clinched the team prize for B&R ahead of a team from Cocks Moor Wood.

Phil Richardson (B&R) came home first MV50 in 66.33 with David Whymant (Amazing Feet) first MV60 in 67.43.

The women’s race was won by a popular race regular, Joan Clarke (Stourbridge) in 72.18. Kate Whitfield (u/a) ran strongly to take second prize in 75.15 with Ellen Ambrose (Halesowen) third and first FV45 in 77.15.

As Kate Whitfield had taken the prize for 2nd overall, the trophy for FV35 went to Mel Hepke (59th overall with 78.37) who also won the Brian Hetherington trophy as the first B&R woman home. Similarly as Joan had taken the prize for first place, Hilary O’Shea (Abingdon) won the FV50 trophy with a time of 84.28.

Thanks to Waseley Hills School, Waseley Hills Country Park and all the helpers, cake-makers, marshals, backroom staff and supporters who volunteered their time for the event. Special thanks and congratulations have to go to the out-going race committee (Pete Hawcroft, Roger Beacham and Mike Mole) who have steered the race for two decades in its various incarnations. The in-coming team has a hard act to follow. Finally thanks again to all the runners, first-timers and regulars, for supporting the race, even smiling on the uphills (sometimes) and see you in 2009!
