Women’s A Cup Final
B&R’s women had finished second in their division to qualify for the A cup final. A big turn out saw a great result with the team finishing fourth out of 9 clubs, only 5 points behind third-placed Birchfield Harriers.
Women's Cup Final report by team manager Polly
A full team represented Bromsgrove & Redditch in the Ladies A Cup Final. Melanie Hepke, Yasmine Scoltock and Jayne Parsons all gained valuable points in the sprints and Polly Gerner won the W50 200m. Dagmar Prinzing and Rita Brownlie ran well in the 800m. Jane Anderson and Louise Laxton tackled the 1500m and Melanie and Barbara Lewis the 3,000m. Jeanette Malin W45 and Yvonne Priestman W60 were both second in their events, set new track records in the 2km walk.
Julie Wakelam gained the most team points in the field event, she was fourth in the W45 hammer, all her other events were in the younger W35 age group, she was second in the high jump, triple jump and discus. Louise Laxton was second in the W50 high jump and won the W50 shot setting a new club record. Rita Brownlie was second in the W50 javelin and took third place in the W50 discus. Polly Gerner was third in the W45 long jump.
A good team effort saw the baton safely round in both the 100m and 400m relays.
The ladies team finished a creditable fourth place out of the eight teams who contested the A final.

Men’s B Cup Final report by Men’s Team Manager Yasmine

Above: Calvin on his way to a great 2:13.9 for 800m
B&R’s mens vets team had started the season slowly with only Mike Jones and Russell Rawlings competing in the first league fixture at this same venue back in May. Numbers have gradually increased and theteam finished fifth in the league. There were new faces and team members trying new events as the team competed in the B cup final..
After a week of emailing various male club members and offering bribes, I was impressed to see so many turn out for the cup final and we managed to fill all but 2 events – the pole vault and the M40 high jump.
Phil Anderson opened the day by competing in the M40 hammer throw for the first time ever and gained the club a valuable 4 points. Not only did Phil compete he had to officiate too – a true all rounder!

Above: Mike Neylon made his debut for the club in the 800m
Calvin was next to go in the M35 800m and put in a stunning performance of 2:13.9 to break his own club record and earning 8 points in the process.
New member Mike Neylon stepped up to race in the M40 800m and 100m, putting in strong races in both and bringing in a further 9 points.
Dave Cleverley finally made a Masters appearance this season and raced the M50(!) 800m putting in a good time (2:38.9) and earning 5 points. Dave also stepped in at the last minute to participate in the M40 3000m, a particularly tough race. Despite this Dave managed to provide the stadium with a display of showmanship that was greatly appreciated! 2 more points went to the club. Dave then hot footed it over to the M50 high jump and added another 4 points to his total!
While all this excitement continued on the track Calvin and Phil carried the flag at the field events, Calvin jumping in the M35 long jump to gain 4 points and Phil taking part in M35 shot and M40 discus to earn 8 points.
As the afternoon wore on the smell of Deep Heat got stronger, and the various performance-enabling drugs were dug out of kit bags (mostly paracetamol and ibuprofen!)

Above: Clive in the thick of the action in the 3000m

Above: Dave made up ground to nearly catch the Droitwich runner on the last leg of the 4 x 100m
Clive Brown arrived and also ran a strong race in the M50 3000m in a good time of 11.11.2, before competing in the M40 triple jump off a 7m board. Clive earned 11 more precious points for the club.
After a last minute panic, looking for Calvin, 4 men made it to their start positions for the 4 x 100m. Calvin, Mike, Phil and Dave did well and managed to get the baton round in 58 seconds. 4 more points to the club.

Above: Men’s 4 x 100m team (Mike, Phil, Calvin & Dave)
Phil appeared on the track again for the M40 400m, followed by Len in his debut race of the day, the M60 400m and 100m. Both ran strong races and despite Len being injured he gained his first 6 points of the day.

Above: Rob Mole on his way to a club record in M35 1500m
Rob Mole, another master’s debutant, followed these performances, with 2 excellent races of his own. In the M35 1500m he finished in 4.40.8 breaking Calvin’s club record and in the M35 200m he broke Paul Atkins’ club record to set one of his own with 27.1 seconds – Well done Rob! The club are expecting to see a lot more of you next year!
Another well-earned 11 points came the clubs way.
Dave finished his individual events with a M50 200m, gaining 5 points.
Len meanwhile competed in the M60 1500m before making a season debut in the M60 long jump! A star performance by Len, despite those injuries, gave B&R another 6 points.
(If anyone photos of Mike Jones competing at the final, please send them via the reports link on the homepage so I can add some here. Thanks Phil)
While we were in the stadium cheering on our track performers, several of the field events had moved out to a separate unseen area. Despite this (or maybe because of it) Mike Jones put in fantastic performances in the M60 Discus, M60 Javelin and the M50 Shot. Mike threw seasons bests in Javelin and Discus, breaking his own club record in the discus with 31.58m! An excellent performance and the club gained 22 points. Phil also put in a good throw in the Javelin to gain 3 more club points.
Rob Mole and Dave Carney filled in the race walk events ( a big thank you to both of you!), earning 12 points. Dave Carney also captured a club record for himself!

Above: Dave powers round the first bend at the start of the 4 x 400m

Above: The men’s 4 x 400m team (Rich, Phil, Dave and Rob).
The last event of the day was the 4 x 400m relay, ran by Dave, Phil, Rich Malin and Rob. This was probably one of the most eventful races of the day; we finished second from last despite Rob having to retrieve the dropped baton! Well done to all of you and a special thank you to Rich for pulling on his running shoes and taking part! (Rich was only there to give his wife some moral support!)
I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed my day as Men’s Masters manager and will hopefully have you all whipped into shape for next season!!
As for the winner of the alcoholic beverage
On individual points this was Mike Jones with 22 points – well done
The second winner to include relay points was Phil Anderson with 27 points (9 from relays)
We also managed to set 6 new club records on the day too.
Of course all of this depends on me having done the maths correctly and the records being confirmed but well done all of you!
Of course I want you all to come back next season to do more, particularly in the Men’s 35 and 50 age groups. I am open to suggestions on bribes and there is a special prize for any man who takes part in the pole vault.
